Changing gears and planning
*
Use
the Mirror-Position-Speed-Look routine when planning ahead
into junctions and bends.
*
Changing down gears helps to reduce speed on the approach
to a bend and gives the driver time to assess the shape
of the bend ahead.
*
Use the intermediate gears for acceleration and select
the higher gears to help reduce fuel consumption when
cruising at higher speeds.
*
When you intend to stop this can be done in the same gear
- it's not neccessary to downshift when just coming to
rest.
*
If you drive in slow moving traffic, the car must be in
the correct gear to match the speed. It's alright however
to "block change" through the gears ie change
from fourth down to second for example or third to first.
